Indian School for Design of Automobiles

Indian School for Design of Automobiles

We are the world’s second largest automobile market after China. Over the last two decades, the Indian automobile market and industry has become truly world-class when it comes to manufacturing, supply chain, servicing, customer management and logistics. In some cases we set the benchmark.

Concurrently, the market is becoming increasingly complex in terms of consumer need-states, usage behaviour, UI-UX, safety, emissions and energy.

The one area where we need to be world-class is automobile design and styling. We need to not only ‘make in India’ but also ‘create in India’ for which design thinking and capability are critical inputs.

All evolved automobile markets have a robust design infrastructure in the form of institutions and a systemic support of local design talent, be it IED in Italy, Art Center in US, Pforzheim in Germany and Strate in France.

India has no institute dedicated to automobile design, identifying the right talent and finishing them into potent world-class designers. Due to this, talented students are forced to go overseas for further studies while automakers and design studios invest many months in making the fresh recruits come up to speed in both understanding and skills.

It is this white space of a dedicated school of a masters or super-specialisation in automobile design that INDEA wishes to fill up.

INDEA is the Indian School for Design of Automobiles.

India’s first dedicated super-specialisation school for automobile design.

It is a partnership between Asia’s oldest and one of the most respected business schools, XLRI, and Avik Chattopadhyay, an automobile industry professional (and also alumnus of XLRI).

The school will rest on three pillars

  • Balance of intuition and industrial knowledge
  • Rich industry interface
  • Exposure to global thought and application

Based within the XLRI Delhi-NCR campus, the school will create a unique learning environment of a full-fledged studio housing the latest software and hardware, some of the world’s leading practising designers as faculty and live projects leading to the creation of working prototypes.

It will address all aspects of automotive design, from components, lights, tyres, interior layouts to the entire vehicle, from two-wheelers, to three-wheelers, cars, commercial vehicles and buses.

The formal announcement of the school was made on 04th of March 2024 in New Delhi before the media, automobile industry and design fraternity. The response from the media, messages from leading designers and industry people and the educational community has been overwhelming.
